WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- A hundred students from 45 states were guests at the White House On Tuesday. They were honored in the East Room as part of the second annual White House Science Fair.

All of them are winners of science competitions across the country.
Jack Dudley of Ashburn and Sydney Dayyani from Leesburg were part of the team representing Virginia.

The middle schoolers invented a new kind of helmet for the battlefield. It consists of layers of kevlar and it even has an airbag.

"We wanted to invent this helmet to save troops' lives,
reduce troop injuries and save our country billions of dollars
in health care costs," said Jack Dudley, who is 11 years old.

Jack and Sydney's team will be featured in Mike Hydeck's Cool Schools segment next Thursday.
