Manny Ramirez is accused of slapping his wife.
WESTON, Fla. (AP) -- Former World Series MVP Manny Ramirez made his first court appearance after a domestic dispute at his South Florida home and was ordered to have no direct contact with his wife.
Broward Circuit Judge Jon Hurley set bail at $2,500 Tuesday morning, but it was not immediately clear when Ramirez would leave the Broward County Jail.
Police say 39-year-old Ramirez was arguing with his wife, Juliana, when he slapped her face, causing her to hit her head on the headboard of their bed. She told the deputy she was afraid the situation would escalate.
Authorities say Ramirez denied hitting his wife.
Ramirez retired in April from the Tampa Bay Rays rather than facing a 100-game suspension after tested positive a second time for a performance-enhancing substance.
