WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) - Lee Denim jeans will hold their annual Lee National Denim Day again this year and their Ambassador for the special day is Desperate Housewives Felicity Huffman.
For a small donation people around the country can wear jeans Friday, October 8th. The money raised will go to support the Women's Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.
Huffman's character on Desperate Housewives, Lynnette Scavo, is a cancer survivor, so the Emmy award winner knows how important research and support groups are for people battling the disease.
"It is an easy effective way to make a difference, all of us in some way or another have been affected by breast cancer." Huffman adds, "Donate in the name of love what is that thing you love. And I would say I heart my six sisters and my two little girls."
Lee National Denim Day is able to raise millions of dollars in a single day and the money is used to benefit groups to help women with breast cancer, either with new research or support groups.
The Wellness Community Greater Washington, DC a local affiliate of the Cancer Support Community is one of the groups that will see a portion of the proceeds.
The Bethesda based organization has programs like Laughing RX or laughing yoga to help women and men living with breast cancer.
President and CEO of the Wellness Community, Paula Rothenberg said "People are living a lot longer with cancer; they have a lot of needs associated with survivorship."
They plan to use the money they receive from Lee National Denim Day to help fund a weekly support group aimed at black women with the rare triple negative breast cancer strain.
All of their services are free at the Wellness Center and Paula said they are excited to be part of this great fundraiser. "It is very exciting for us that Lee Jeans has grasped the fact that it is very important that some resources have to go to people living with cancer, not just to research."
Since it began in 1996, Lee National Denim Day has raised more than $75 million. People can go online to sign up to receive a free participation kit.
