WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Diabetes is a huge global problem. Unfortunately, we still don't know the cause of Type 1 or juvenile diabetes.

Two people are determined to help find an answer through a unique fundraiser.  Wayne Harris and Alex Elman are involved with the Fourth Annual Motorcycle Ride on Saturday in Frederick.

Alex Elman told us, "I was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when I was nine. When I was 27, I lost my sight due to juvenile diabetes. and then I had to have a kidney transplant a year later all due to diabetes. I suffered the consequences and ravages but fortunately I'm here to show people what can happen with diabetes, because people don't realize how dangerous a disease it is but also to be able to support fundraising efforts and live my life around that."

Now, Alex runs a hugely successful business. "I have a wine import company called AE Wines. We have a unique affordable wines as well as other products. Wines that are for everyday, that are healthy now, organic because I think chemicals and things are not good."

She lost her sight but uses her other senses for her business. "It's a great business to be in because you're blind because everybody believes I can smell and taste better," shared Alex.

You're very successful in doing that you're actually from New York and here supporting this effort.

Wayne Harris and his wife founded the Motorcycle Ride. They have raised $22,000 in the last three years.

Harris explained why the cause is important to him. "Wouldn't it be neat if your reporters in the morning could say 'hey, we found a cure for this?' ... That's what we want to do. My wife had it since she was 3. But motorcyclists are all in for charities and I said 'what can we do?' I want to do my part."

The ride takes place Saturday, June 8, in Buckeystown. The kickoff is at 10:00 a.m. and registration is at 8:30 a.m.  After the hours long ride, riders will head to a big party.
