WASHINGTON D.C. (WUSA9) -- American actress Valerie Harper, known for her roles as Rhoda Morgenstern on the television series, "The Mary Tyler More Show" was recently diagnosed with an incurable brain cancer.

The 73-year-old actress says she was terrified at first by the terminal diagnosis, but has decided to make the most out of every day she has, spending time with her husband of 26 years and dear friends, like co-star Cloris Leachman.

Harper recently made her first network television appearances since the January diagnosis. Now-while she still feels strong- she wants to share her outlook, and determination.

Harper appeared on "The Doctors," telling Dr. Travis Stork,"I am cooking my husband's dinner, walking on the bluff at Santa Monica, and more than anything I am living in the moment. I just want Americans to not be so afraid of death. It is a passage."

While the disease is terminal, Harper did tell Dr.Stork," What I have is rare...And my doctors will delineate exactly what is and how it's working... It is incurable-so far-those are the words I focus on- because they are doing research as we speak."
