WASHINGTON (WUSA) --  Faith levels and the meaning of God differ but when it comes to divine performance enhancement, Super Bowl prayers may be the way to go for many pro football players.

That reality begs the question: Does God care about the Super Bowl? So we asked two Washington area religious leaders about this.

Rabbi M. Bruce Lustig of the Washington Hebrew Congregation said, "No unless it was the Redskins in the Super Bowl, and that would be important because it would prove the efficacy of prayer."

Pastor John Slye of Arlington's Grace Church added by echoing those sentiments.

"God absolutely cares about the Super Bowl, but only when the Redskins are playing."

Clearly these two clergy men are hardcore Washingtonians. Unfortunately, for Washington fans the Redskins are not playing in Sunday's game but that doesn't mean prayers to God won't be plentiful.

"For many of those players I'm sure that sports and their personal theology plays a major part of who they are and who they continue to be," Rabbi Lustig said.

Pastor Slye said in the end it's about, "Whatever inspires them (pro football players). It's a tough sport."

We asked a similar question on our Facebook page and your comments were overwhelming.
