WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Electric cars are fuel-efficient but the government says they're too quiet.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration wants those vehicles to make some noise.

NHTSA has proposed that manufacturers choose from a range of sounds that people walking, on bikes and may be visually impaired can hear when the cars are driving under 18 miles per hour.

The public has 60 days to add its input and the agency will consider it to craft a final decision.
