FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA9) -- Falls Church police are searching for two men who robbed a popular Falls Church venue. The crooks got away with cash from The State Theatre's New Year's Eve party featuring the 1980's cover band "the Legwarmers."
One of the stars of the popular '80s tribute band didn't want to show his face on camera but said they were the headlining act at The State Theatre last night on North Washington Street.
"Everybody's having fun, singing along," recalled the musician.
The group left a great New Year's eve bash at their local venue they have played at for 15 years, only to wake up with the bad news.
"It's terrible. I love State Theatre. It's unfortunate that it happened. I was shocked. I saw the news report this morning, I didn't believe it," said the musician.
Falls Church police say two men entered The State Theater just before 7 Wednesday morning. They showed a gun to one of the employees. Then they got away with cash.
"They demanded cash. Luckily, that employee was not injured, " said Susan Finarelli with City of Falls Church Police.
"I do not think of robberies. I think of good music and lots of fun," says business owner Rebecca Tax about the venue.
Crime doesn't happen a whole lot in the small City of Falls Church, but recent activity has shaken this community.
"We've had a lot of scary things happen in the last couple of weeks that are upsetting, " said Tax.
Last Saturday, a man was shot multiple times in the parking lot of a Taco Bell on West Broad Street. He survived but no one has been arrested. Police have also been searching for a killer in a murder that happened last September at the Eden Center. It's the one and only homicide of 2013.
"All of those things add up to something that doesn't equal Falls Church, so it's surprising," said Tax.
The stars of the Legwarmers bring in big cash especially on New Year's Eve. They say, despite the terrible act, they'll continue playing at one of their favorite venues.
The robbers are described as black males in their twenties, possibly younger. They both wore black hooded sweatshirts, black baseball caps and bandanas.
Anyone with information on the suspects or robbery is asked to call police at 703-241-5053.
