DOUGLAS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police may have to follow a trail of crumbs to solve a theft. Over the weekend, more than 100 cookies were stolen from one of the 19 motels involved in a special contest.

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas was the theme of the night, but it's the cookie monster they should've been watching all right.

"As crazy as this sounds, I was devastated because I wanted to win this," says Rusty Ross, general manager of the Blue Star Motel.

18 motels were competing for best cookie and the Blue Star Motel was only a rookie. It's the motel's first year in business and the manager was all set for the date. However, three visitors came and left the motel with an empty cookie plate.

"A spritz butter cookie is what it was," says Ross. "A group of ladies showed up. One of the ladies asked if they could see a room, so I showed her the room."

In the meantime, the other two managed to flee and when Ross returned there was nothing left to see.
