RISING SUN, Md. (WUSA9) -- According to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, several animals died in a fire on Wednesday night at a pet shop in Rising Sun, Md. Authorities say that several people were able to escape adjacent apartments.
The fire occurred at Jon's Exotic Pets Shop at 10 S. Queen Street. Authorities say that the two-alarm fire at 7:54 p.m. was brought under control in approximately an hour due to the efforts of approximately 70 firefighters from Cecil and Harford Counties as well as Lancaster County, Pa.
Authorities say the fire was contained to the first floor of the pet shop and some smoke damage extended to business suites and two apartments next to it. Authorities add that six people were able to safely leave their apartments and are being helped by the American Red Cross.
Some of the animals at the pet shop, however, died in the fire. Authorities say they have not determined the number of pets that perished at this time and that Cecil County Animal Control is collecting several of the animals.
The fire left an estimated total of $750,000 worth of damage, according to fire officials. Deputy State Fire Marshals are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
