(WUSA9)--- The noon newscast welcomed Richard Yep, the CEO of the American Counseling Association, and he discussed the dramatic expansion on mental health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
People are demanding improvement in gun control laws with tragedies occurring like the Navy Yard Shooting and the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. However, many people have failed to mention the importance of mental health treatment for those who survive these incidents.
Richard suggests that mental health treatment is just as significant as other health care treatments. That is why anything that reduces the stigma around mental health counseling such as the Affordable Care Act will be very positive for the community.
Reports have shown that many who have acted on gun violence suffered from mental conditions that were never treated. The Affordable Care Act will benefit many families, schools and young people who need it by offering equal coverage.
