WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Metro Transit Police say a Virginia station manager has been charged with felony embezzlement.

Forty-four-year-old Kenneth Peters was arrested on Oct. 16 after a months-long internal investigation, said Philip Stewart, WMATA Public Information Officer.

"The internal investigation found that Peters transferred value from paper fare cards onto SmarTrip cards for the purpose of reselling them," said Stewart.

Peters was immediately suspended after the investigation -- he was a WMATA employee since 1999.

Statement from Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik:

The fraudulent activity alleged in this case is an affront to all Metro employees. As stewards of the public's trust, Metro Transit Police are committed to prosecuting these crimes to the full extent of the law.
