Handcuffed Man Dies During Traffic Stop

 ELKRIDGE, Md.  (WUSA/HCPD) - Howard County police are investigating an incident in which a man died during a traffic stop this morning in Elkridge.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., an officer pulled over a vehicle with suspended tags on southbound Route 1 at the exit to Route 100 West.

The driver, identified as Hakeem Muhammad, 51, of Baltimore, was found to be driving with suspended tags and provided false information as to his identity. He was arrested and placed in handcuffs.

 At that time, he complained of not feeling well and collapsed to the ground in a medical emergency, which is being investigated by medical personnel as a possible cardiac arrest.


The officer immediately began to perform CPR. EMS  responded to the scene and assumed CPR.

  Muhammad was transported to Howard County General Hospital and was pronounced dead.


Police are working with medical personnel to confirm the exact cause of death.
