BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County police say they have recovered a child who was kidnapped from an apartment building on Thursday. Police say the 3-year-old boy is safe and there is one person in custody.
The man who took the child had allegedly crashed his car in the intersection of Tuckerman Lane and Rockville Pike just before he broke into one apartment with a mom and another child inside shortly before 10:41 a.m. Thursday.
Police say he then ran into another apartment on the third floor and snatched the three year old boy. He didn't get far. Police locked down the building and surrounded him in the stairwell of a nearby parking garage, say officials.
Investigators later determined that the man got into the first floor apartment by breaking a rear window, then when the building's fire alarm was activated a woman on the third floor went to exit her apartment to investigate. That's when the man entered the third floor apartment and took the child, say police.
The man was injured and taken to the hospital.
He has been identified as 27-year-old Shervin Hessamfar. Police say he is charged with kidnapping a child under 16 and two counts of burglary.
Police say the boy is fine and was reunited with the mother.
