Cornet, Robson bow out in China

Guangzhou, China (Sports Network) - Second seed Alize Cornet and third-seeded British left-hander Laura Robson were a pair of quarterfinal upset victims Thursday at the $500,000 Guangzhou Open tennis event.

Austrian Yvonne Meusburger doused the Frenchwoman Cornet in 6-4, 6-1 fashion, while Chinese crowd favorite Zheng Jie knocked out Robson 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 on the hardcourts at Guangzhou International Tennis Center. Robson was last year's runner-up here to Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh.

Another upset came when American qualifier Vania King took out eighth-seeded Puerto Rican Monica Puig 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

One other quarter saw Chinese wild card Zhang Shuai defeat British qualifier Johanna Konta 7-5, 6-3.

Friday's semifinals will pit King against Zheng and Zhang versus Meusburger.

This week's winner will earn $112,080.
