RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Watkins Abbitt, a former Democratic House of Delegates member who became an independent and organized with House Republicans, is set to endorse Democrat Terry McAuliffe for governor.

Abbitt, who represented a large swath of Southside Virginia farm country in the House for 28 years before retiring in 2011, says McAuliffe will be the first Democrat he's backed since he left the Democratic Party in 2001.

The 68-year-old Abbitt said he will endorse McAuliffe on Wednesday afternoon at a dairy farm in Evington.
