RESTON, Va. (WUSA) -- A pen pal exercise changed lives at the Edlin School.

French students wrote teens their own age in Senegal to practice learning the language. Their counterparts wrote back in English so they too could practice a new language.

After writing for a few weeks, the students at Edlin learned the school in Senegal was overcrowded and administrators were trying to build some new classrooms but couldn't afford it.

Edlin students jumped into action. They staged a read-a-thon and raised more than $5,000 toward the construction effort!

And what's really COOL they got to deliver the check in person in Senegal!

French Teacher Elisabeth Seye: "They really were touched by what they saw, what they experienced, by what they smelled, by what they tasted."

"You have a really good sense, a feeling inside that you gave to other people and you made their day a little bit brighter," says Ibou Seye, an 8th Grader.

Too COOL!!!
