(WUSA9)--- The recent confusion under the Affordable Care Act has been providing criminals with the perfect opportunity to scam many consumers in the DC area.

Today, we welcomed WUSA9 Call for Action Director Shirley Rooker, who shared with us some useful tips that will prevent you from being a victim of identity theft.

Beware of two types of scams on the phone:
One will state that you need a new social security card.
The other will tell seniors that they can receive new Medicaid benefits under the Affordable Care Act.  From there, the caller will usually ask for your personal information.

It is important to always verify who is calling you before giving out your personal information.  However, the best solution is to just simply hang up if you feel like the phone call is a scam. You can also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission.  Watch the interview above!
