PURCELLVILLE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Hours after a Loudoun County school bus crashed in front of a golf course, we are told that 17 people were hurt in the crash. The number is up from 8 injured, which included the bus driver.

According to fire officials, the Loudoun County bus was on its way to Mountain View Elementary School when it was involved in an accident in the 36900 block of Main Street in Purcellville at 7:33 a.m.

A Loudoun County Schools spokesperson now tells us tha tthe bus crashed through a fence at the Purcellville County club and hit a pine tree. The front of the bus absorbed most of the shock like it's supposed to, says the spokesperson, and the cabin of the bus was fine.

Thirty seven students were on the bus at the time. Sixteen students and the bus driver were transported to the hospital, says the school spokesperson. Ten of those students have been treated for cuts and bloody noses and released.

Officials say the Loudoun County School Board was notified of the incident.
