Officials in Miami said Saturday that they believe they have found the body of a Florida man who fell out of a private plane earlier this week.
A body believed to be that of Gerardo Nales, 42, of Key Biscayne, Fla., was discovered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, said Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, with the Miami-Dade Police Department. The body was found in a mangrove area near the ocean in Miami.
"Even though we presume that the body found is that of Gerardo Nales, investigators are (waiting for) 'official identification' from the Medical Examiner's Office," Zabaleta said.
Nales was the only passenger in a small Piper 46 airplane on Thursday afternoon. The aircraft, which can hold up to five passengers, had just taken off from Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport in Miami.
The plane was flying at about 2,000 feet, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.
The pilot called "Mayday, mayday, mayday," to local air traffic control, according to a recording made on the LiveATC.net site, which streams air-traffic-control communications.
"I have a door ajar and a passenger that fell down. I am six miles from Tamiami," the pilot said.
The air-traffic controller responded, "You said you have a passenger that fell out of your plane?"
"That's correct, sir," the pilot responded. "He opened the back door and he just fell down the plane."
Miami police marine and air units began an immediate search, which continued until Saturday.
