BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA) -- Sumo Wrestling in the 5th grade? Well sort of. The competition takes place with motorized robots built by the students at Woods Academy.
The LEGO kits come complete with electric motors and photo sensitive eyes for navigation. When they are done building them, students run the robots into each other in a Sumo-like competition. Knock your opponent out of the circle, and you win.
This goes far beyond a fun "smash-em up" derby type challenge though.
Not only are they learning basic engineering skills as they construct their "SUMO-BOTS" but they even get computer programming experience when they connect their robots to the computer. That's where they electronically give it commands before they send it into battle. How COOL is that?
