WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- More than four decades in the classroom, and she still knows how to connect with students.

Barbara Menard teaches math at "School Without Walls" in DC. Using everything from texting shorthand to get kids to remember math solutions, to teaching how to quilt so they can learn different triangles in geometry, she takes the fear out of math.

"So that they are not afraid to try. It's okay to make a mistake, it's okay to fall down someone is going to be there to pick you up and push you along," she says.

Tyrec Grooms is a senior at School Without Walls. He lost 2 family members to untimely deaths recently, his family moves to a new apartment every couple of months, and yet he still finds a way to study. He says Menard is a big reason why. "She wants you to learn the material, more than just giving you a grade."

And thanks to a partnership with a local university, Principal Richard Trogisch says Grooms will graduate from with a School Without Walls diploma as well as an Associates degree from George Washington University. And the college credits are FREE of charge!!! That's a $100,000 value. How cool is that?!!!
