WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Some veterans frustrated with the government shutdown took matters into their own hands tearing down the barricades at the World War II Memorial.  While some gates have returned so have the same group of veterans. They were granted a special permit under a First Amendment waiver to hold Monday's ceremony.

Eighty six WWII veterans chartered a flight from Montana for this memorable moment. The men of the greatest generation who fought in a brutal war, sacrificing the unspeakable for the freedoms we enjoy today, were in awe of the memorial to honor them... all the while frustrated with state of the country and a government shutdown.

Despite it all, Monday is about honor, service and remembrance.
