Shoplifter gets gun from security guard, fires shots

LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- A security guard at a store in Laurel reported that a shoplifter was able to get his gun away from him during a struggle and fire several shots.

Police say they responded to Weiss Market in the 3300 block of Corridor Market Place at 8:02 p.m. Sunday for the report of a shoplifting and shots fired. 

A security guard there, who is licensed to carry a firearm, told officers he approached a shoplifter in the store and attempted to take him into custody. Police say a struggle ensued and the shoplifter was able to get the security guard's semi-automatic handgun. The shoplifter fired several shots in the store during the struggle and then fled on foot with the gun, according to police.

Police have not located the suspect yet. He is described as a Black male, approximately 5'10", 140 pounds with dark hair, wearing a red shirt, dark pants and a jacket.

No one was injured during the shooting.
