WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The South Carolina man who brought his lawnmower and chainsaw to the National Mall during the federal government shutdown is being rewarded.

Chris Cox kept the grounds clean around the Lincoln Memorial, where he returned Wednesday to receive a chainsaw and other donations from around the country that were raised through a charity crowd-funding site.

Chris is a woodcutting artist who inspired a nation by mowing, clearing fallen trees and emptying trash during the government shutdown.

Chris worked during the shutdown without accepting any tips or other forms of compensation. The Crowd It Forward campaign was set up without his knowledge.

The money will help Chris cover some of the costs of leaving his business as well as the several parking tickets he received and the damage to his equipment.

The chainsaw, a STIHL MS-660, was donated by STIHL.
