WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA9)-- Volunteers at "So Others Might Eat " (SOME) were serving up free lunch on Veterans Day in Northwest DC.

Joe Queen, former Sergeant in the US Army was there and quickly rose his hand when I asked if there were any veterans  present.

Joe had been a mechanic in Vietnam. He knew sniper fire and says he sought treatment at the Veterans Administration for Agent Orange and Post Traumatic Syndrome (PTSD) in the years after he returned to the DC area.

He's still dealing with the VA and says "they've gotten better" in recent years.

A staffer at SOME says they serve about 400 meals twice a day and veterans can make up to a third of their clients.

Veterans make up about one fourth to one fifth of the country's homeless population.

One in five returning Vets between the ages of 18-25 are unemployed. And the VA reported in February that each day 22 veterans commit suicide. That's one every 65 minutes.
