CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - The director of a state psychiatric hospital says it's not clear how a patient obtained a metal spike that police say he used to stab a nurse in the head.

Fifty-year-old Craig Zello of Hagerstown has been charged with attempted murder in the attack Monday morning at the Thomas B. Finan Center in Cumberland.

Finan Center CEO Judy Hott says the origin of the 7-inch galvanized spike is under investigation by police. She says it's possible the tool came from a gutter on the outside of the building.

Hott says the nurse who was stabbed was treated in the emergency room and released.

Court records show Zello was found not criminally responsible on an attempted armed carjacking charge in 2006 and was transferred to the Finan Center in 2012.
