WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Think back if you can to April 20, 1999. That's the day Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris made the name Columbine a permanent part of the American Lexicon of Tragedy. That day we were all shocked out of our minds - outraged!

Surely we would do something so that this sort of thing could never happen again. Or else maybe this new sickness in our society would just go away on its own.

Well, fast forward 14 years, and the plague of indiscriminate violence has taken many more lives at places like Virginia Tech or Aurora and now the Navy Yard. And most disturbing of all, it feels like mass murder has sort of become a thing, a part of the landscape. As we saw yesterday, the cops now know exactly how to react.

And Let's Be Real - so do we. Sure there is still some initial outrage, followed by grief, but now fading to a kind of terrible numb acceptance.

Because this is our new reality, that in a land where the mentally ill can often procure a gun far more easily than they can psychiatric help. One thing we know for sure - this kind of tragedy, this sickness, will not go away on its own.
