(WUSA) -- A UPS tractor-trailer was in the southbound lanes crossing the Harry Nice Bridge when it rolled into the northbound lanes.

Sgt. Kirk Perez with the Maryland Transportation Authority Police said about 4:44 p.m. Wednesday, a UPS tractor-trailer was in the southbound lanes crossing the bridge when a wind gust from a storm in the area apparently caused the truck to roll into the northbound lanes. The truck ended up lying on the parapet wall.

Perez said the truck was pulled upright about 5:40 p.m. It was the only vehicle involved in the accident.

The truck driver received very minor injuries and did not need to be transported.

Perez said engineers are checking the bridge making sure there was no structural damage. Shortly after 6 p.m. he told us that he expected the bridge to reopen to traffic within the next half hour.

One woman told us about the long wait for drivers on and surrounding the bridge. Charmaine Wiggins said she was in Waldorf, Maryland when she heard a report about the accident that told drivers they may have to wait.

About 2 or 3 miles away, she says she hit the traffic that was backed up at the scene. Wiggins estimated that she was going about 2 1/2 miles per hour when the traffic was crawling along but she also waited for about an hour, putting her car in park a few times.

Wiggins told us that for the most part people were calm, but some drivers became tired of waiting. She says she saw cars driving on the shoulder or attempting to make a U-turn to get back to La Plata to wait out the cleanup.

Wiggins told us that there were signs that there had been some kind of spillage; a patch of the roadway was covered by what appeared to be sand. We have not yet confirmed with MTA that there was any spillage.
