WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Are you always burnt out at the end of the work week? Working too hard and lack of sleep may not be the reasons for your fatigue. You may not realize it, but your body might be trying to tell you something.
Dr. Allen J. Taylor, Chief of Cardiology of MedStar Heart Institute and past member of the American College of Cardiology Board of Governors says, "The good thing about fatigue, and paying attention to fatigue is that it's a common symptom and it usually means something isn't right."
There can be many conditions that will cause your fatigue. Dehydration will make you tired. Fighting infections will wear you down. It's your body's way of forcing you to rest. Some health conditions can actually hinder your body from absorbing the proper nutrients.
"If you are eating an unbalanced diet you might be missing nutrients. So you can be low in B12 for instance or iron and those things can cause low blood counts and anemia and lead to fatigue," adds Dr. Taylor.
Working out too much will lead to fatigue. So pace yourself, over-exertion is a form of physical stress. So all forms of stress whether physical or emotional will lead to fatigue.
Dr. Taylor says, "You are burning the candle on both ends, you gotta take it easy so take a little time off and see how you are feeling."
Fatigue can also signal major cardiovascular problems, such as weak heat muscle, heart failure, and heart valve problems.
"Most patients with pretty much all forms of heart disease can have fatigue as a symptom. Fatigue can be a symptom of an impending heart attack," adds Dr. Taylor.
So look for symptoms that accompany fatigue. If there are urinary problems along with fatigue, that can signal a urinary infection. If you aren't eating well and you are tired, you may not be getting the proper vitamins. If you have chest pains with fatigue you may have a form of heart disease.
Dr. Taylor says, "In our study up to two-thirds of patients had fatigue prior to a heart attack, so it can really precede the development of heart disease."
So think twice if you are constantly tired. Maybe it's time to visit a physician.
