ASHBURN, Va. (WUSA 9) -- For the past three years, the rivalry between Briar Woods and Broad Run has taken on a deeper meaning.

In a tradition called Battle for a Better Cause, the two teams use the hype surrounding their cross-town rivalry to raise money for a cause close to the hearts of those in the Ashburn community.

Friday's game at Briar Woods will be a white out in support of childhood cancer research. The game will honor Gavin Rupp.

Gavin, a resident of Ashburn, died in July after a three-year fight with brain cancer. He was 13 years old.

Gavin was a football and baseball fan. His courage in the face of his illness touched those in his community and as the Washington Post reported, inspired Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. A few weeks before he died, Gavin spent over an hour with Harper and threw out the first pitch at Nationals Park.

Fans at Friday's game, officially named Stand up for Gavin Rupp, can contribute by buying a t-shirt designed in Gavin's memory. They cost $10 and checks should be made out to "GRMF."

The stadium opens at 5:30 p.m. and the game kicks off at 7:00 p.m.
