(WUSA9) -- ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will start the Monday night opener against the Eagles.

Schefter tweeted out the news on Wednesday morning.

Earlier this week people speculated that Griffin would be cleared to play in the regular season when he meets with his surgeon Thursday night.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday that Griffin would meet with Dr. James Andrews while the team was in Florida for their final preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Andrews cleared Griffin for practice before training camp then examined Griffin again before the Aug. 19 home preseason game. Shanahan reported that Andrews  "felt very good" about Griffin's progress.

Griffin had reconstructive surgery on his right knee in January, days after he was hurt in a game against the Seattle Seahawks.
