WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- There are work zones all across our area.
And, if you're not careful you could get an expensive reality check to slow down.
This "Heads Up" comes from a viewer who contacted our WUSA 9 Call For Action team to say this happened to him.
It turns out, you can get hit with a penalty in many states even if NO work is being done in those zones.
According to theNational Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, here's how the DMV breaks down.
In DC, if you commit any moving violation in a work zone where signs are posted and workers are out, you could be hit with the double the original fine.
Speeding through a work zone with posted signs and workers out in Virginia, that fine could go up to $500.
But in Maryland, if you speed through a work zone you could get hit with up to a $1,000 fine EVEN if no work is going on and signs are posted.
Now you know.
